Week 1 Analysis: Businesses & Blogs

My assignment is to perform an analysis on three separate blogs: Dollar Shave Club Blog, Science World Blog, and Full Sail University Blog. The three of them are all similar to each other in many ways, one being that they are all targeted towards a younger audience. Their articles are modern and focus on things that are trending, and tend to appeal to our current, younger generation. For example, Science World Blog has an illustration of Darth Vader as one of the covers for their blogs, and Full Sail Blog features Red Bull as one of their top stories. All of these blogs certainly have their audience figured out, and did a great job at specifically appealing to that age group.

Now we will compare and contrast the difference between two blogs vs. the other one. As similar as one might preemptively think blogs are to each other, there are elements that unite some to each other. What I had noticed from a design aspect, was that Science World Blog and Dollar Shave Club Blog are similar to each other because they have the same basic layout. Each blog is just their general feed in the center, and an index on the side. Full Sail Blog is set up very differently, visually. On the other hand, Full Sail Blog and Dollar Shave Club Blog differ from Science World Blog because their sites are set up specifically for blogs. The Science World Blog is located on Science World’s main website, as an addition to the site. Last but not least, Science World Blog and Full Sail Blog both have a different dynamic than Dollar Shave Club Blog. The Dollar Shave Club Blog generally only posts about the Dollar Shave Club and it’s causes. The other two contain posts about various different subjects, and aren’t limited to just articles involving their brand. This was my favorite analysis, because it caused me to view the blogs in a different way than I ever conventionally would have. It caused me to feel as though I’m thinking like a true Media Communications master.

It’s time to point out what sets each of these blogs individually apart from each other. Dollar Shave Club Blog has such a fantastic sense of humor that pulls one into the article, because it creates the reader to smile. For instance, there was a post on March 19, that was for a colon cancer charity. They took an important cause, for something that is not a humorous subject, and made it light hearted. Science World Blog is simply so full of so many cool articles, about things you never knew you wanted to know about. They make science and random facts intriguing. They make you want to learn about the knee bone, and peak your curiosity. Full Sail’s Blog is unique in not only their media centered articles, but also their visual appeal. They chose to use animation on their homepage, that scrolls through different articles automatically. That makes it eye catching, and causes you to want to see what subject comes up next.

The world of blogging is very new to me. I had heard a lot about it, and I had a general idea of what blogging was in a nutshell. Up until this class, I hadn’t actually gotten into reading blogs, writing them, I didn’t even know what an RSS feed was. The blog analysis was the perfect thing for me to dig deeper into the world of blogging, and actually take into consideration what I need to keep in mind when reading or writing blogs.
